(Cardiff University).
Researchers from CancerThera welcomed Prof. Dr. Dimitris Parthimos, biomathematician and researcher at Cardiff University (United Kingdom), for a visit to the Clinical Oncology Service of the Hospital de Clínicas and the Hemocenter, both part of Unicamp, on May 3rd.
Parthimos is part of the Cancer and Genetics Division (DCG) at Cardiff University, focusing on studying tissue microenvironment signaling in tumors using biomathematical techniques, which involves investigating the cellular origins of cancer and how the disease manifests in the body’s organs and systems. He is also dedicated to prostate cancer research using innovative molecular biomarkers and machine learning technology to improve diagnostics.
In addition to visiting the institution’s facilities, the professor’s presence provided an opportunity to establish dialogue around potential partnerships in oncology research projects. Collaboration between Cardiff University and Unicamp could lead to scientific advancements, potentially resulting in important discoveries for cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Follow some highlights of the visit below:

The visit began with Prof. Dr. José Barreto Carvalheira, clinical care coordinator at Hospital de Clínicas/Unicamp and principal investigator at CancerThera, presenting the hospital’s history, facilities, human resources, and current clinical activities.

In the photo, Prof. Dr. Vanessa Carvalho, from the Department of Anesthesiology, Oncology, and Radiology at FCM/Unicamp, Prof. Dr. Marcelo Brocchi, from the Unicamp Research Office, and Prof. Dimitris Parthimos, from Cardiff University, during Carvalheira’s presentation.

The visit continued at the Clinical Oncology Service of Hospital de Clínicas/Unicamp, where Prof. Dr. Carmen Silvia Passos Lima, principal investigator and innovation coordinator at CancerThera, presented the outpatient care areas with multidisciplinary teams, chemotherapy unit, and pharmacy.
Next, at the Hemocenter/Unicamp, Prof. Dr. Carmino A. de Souza, principal investigator and director of CancerThera, introduced our research center and detailed its objectives and ongoing studies.

For his part, Parthimos provided an overview of Cardiff University’s contributions to oncology research, highlighting the institution’s scientific output and the potential for collaboration with Unicamp.

Dr. Juliana Carron, postdoctoral researcher at CancerThera under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Carmen Silvia Passos Lima, presented proposals for partnerships between CancerThera researchers and Cardiff University.
Following the presentations, an in-depth discussion took place, fostering dialogue and idea exchange for future joint initiatives.

At the end of the meeting, a moment of fellowship resulted in this photo with all attendees — among them, several members of the Cancer Genetics Laboratory (LAGECA) team. In the foreground, to the left of Parthimos, are Prof. Dr. Carmen Silvia Passos Lima, Prof. Dr. Ana Lúcia Ruiz, from the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Unicamp and associate researcher at CancerThera, and Daniele Daiane Affonso, PhD student at CancerThera.
