“Evaluation of antimicrobial, antiparasitic, and antiviral properties of silver complexes with sulfadoxine derivatives and gold N-heterocyclic carbenes” is the title of the thesis defended on March 19 by Igor Santos Oliveira, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Camilla Abbehausen, both from the Institute of Chemistry (IQ) at Unicamp.
One of the members of the committee was Dr. Victor Marcelo Deflon, principal investigator at CEPID CancerThera and professor at the Institute of Chemistry of São Carlos (IQSC) at USP, making the occasion an opportunity to strengthen relationships between universities and promote knowledge exchange. The committee also included Prof. Dr. Paulo Cesar de Sousa Filho (IQ/Unicamp), Prof. Dr. Ítalo Odone Mazali (IQ/Unicamp), and Prof. Dr. João Honorato de Araújo Neto from the Institute of Chemistry (IQ) at USP.
In addition to parasitic, viral, and bacterial infections, which were the focus of Oliveira’s thesis, silver and gold complexes can also be used for cancer treatment. Gold complexes synthesized by Abbehausen, for example, are part of a research project coordinated by Dr. Carmen Silvia Passos Lima, professor at the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FCM) at Unicamp and principal investigator at CEPID CancerThera, aiming at the treatment of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma.
